to shannon mcmillan, who joins us as one of our plus 5 interns. She is from the USA and is with us for 10 weeks. Her interests are in Christian education and art, and she will be working with us in these areas, including the 24/7 prayer room.

Note for all Opawa people - come on down to church Saturday 21st (morning best) and learn how to make your own ....
There is a mobile coffee cart at Opawa church buildings all Saturday (21st May). If you have ever wanted to know how to make coffee, come along for a free lesson and a practise. Mornings will be best.
Steve Taylor
So Steve, what could happen at a Saturday outdoor creative project?
1. People could be given a blank piece of metal.
2. Adults and children could work together, painting what it means for them to be filled with the Spirit. View image
3. Some people might not only want to paint. They may also want to cut, or hammer, or attach things to their piece of iron. An artist will be around to encourage and offer ideas. View image
4. This is one persons final product, as they sought to express the Spirit as a fountain, God filling to overflowing. This was the first creative painting they had ever done. View image
5. The Spirit fills us not only as individuals, but as a church. All the painted tiles can be added together, and displayed outside, as a visual witness into our community. View image

Note: You need to book by Tuesday, 17 March. There is a $10 charge for materials and for lunch.

Email from the artist who will be guiding the Saturday, 21 May, morning metal work:
A few thoughts: In addition to the corrugated iron it could be fun to have some other materials that we could attach-to or juxtapose beside the iron.
eg: old wood, stencilled packing crate, boxwood, hessian, nylon onion bag cloth, plastic sheeting... wire, nylon rope, bailing twine... flax, cabbage tree leaves...
found materials - what about taking the participants for a walk around the
block or immediate neighbourhood and collecting found materials for possible
inclusion in the work (is there some spiritual link to the use of flosam and
jetsom and junk to make art?).
I guess the artist models I'm thinking of here are people like Rauschenberg,
Johns, Wesselmann, Schwitters...
Materials:
Paint - what about severlely limiting the pallette? eg Black and Red only
(good Canterbury colours) maybe white as well. I find that limiting the colour choices normally makes for better work. acrylic house paint is probably best (faster drying)
Stencils - lettering and numbers
heat gun
pop rivet gun and rivets
power drill and bits that conform to rivet guage
tin snips
hammers, nails
brushes
magazines (possible collage sources)
shellac (is good to work with. You can buy the flakes and dissolve them
overnight in meths). I can source this if you want.

14 is the number of Opawa people attending a 5 week small group leaders course at Bible College of New Zealand during May. Early last month, we wrote to all our small group leaders, suggesting this and offering to pay everyone's fees. The response has been most encouraging.
6 is the number of sofas that have been purchased this week. We've been looking for a good number of sofas for a few months now,in order to make the foyer a more comfortable place to sit and be with each other. We also want to have sofas at Digestion, our interactive evening service, to give a more "relaxed, loungy" feel. This week we discovered an end of line deal, sofa's selling below cost price at the Warehouse. We've been phoned all around Christchurch, then Belfast, then Rangiora, and now as far afield as Dunedin and Invercargill. It's so neat to see a dream finely come to a cheap reality.
2 is the number of rooms being painted at the church this week. With the growth in kids, we've cleared out a room for our 5 year olds. We've also cleared out another room to turn into a 24/7 prayer room. So the hallways of the church smell of paint, as we expand and grow in ministry together.
